You wouldn’t know it if you watched the GOP debate the other night from California, as he hardly had the chance to talk, but Congressman Ron Paul is still in the race for the GOP Presidential nomination.
It’s pretty much a given that things have not worked out his way and he will not be the nominee, however, regardless of that, he can still be a force to reckon with as he appears to be very strong in tomorrow’s Maine caucus. A win there, and those delegates put him in third overall for the delegate count, and above Huckabee:
AUGUSTA, Maine - Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul has a couple of things going for him at this weekend’s Republican caucuses: a band of highly motivated supporters and a natural appeal to Maine’s like-minded independents.
His stop in the state earlier this week also made him the only presidential contender from either party to visit before the caucuses.
“I think that (because) he’s paid attention to Maine, he’ll be rewarded,” R. Kenneth Lindell, Paul’s campaign coordinator in Maine, said Thursday.
That being said, what does a win in a state that no one is even talking about do for him before Super Duper Tuesday:
Maine’s GOP polling Friday, Saturday and Sunday may be the Texas congressman’s best shot at winning a state, and such a feat would be big coming just days before next week’s Super Tuesday presidential preference contests in more than 20 states.
Lindell wouldn’t get into specifics about the number of volunteers Paul has in the state, except to say they number in the hundreds – not a small figure considering Maine’s relatively small population and meager share of the national delegate pool.
In this winner takes all state, all 21 delegates could be Paul’s for taking, IF he meets the expectations here. With the possibility of a brokered convention come September, having a nice chunk of them in your pocket, makes you a very valuable commodity.
Stay tuned…..
